Impacts of ICT in Banking and Money.

Thanks to the internet and the use of ICT money now has many forms, you can have digital money and real cash money along with the use of your debit or credit card. Banking however gained many advantages with the use of ICT, security was a lot easier, money could be kept safe and withdrawn by the use of cash machines which are almost 100% secure.

The banks use ICT for a variety of different processes now:
  • ETF (Electronic Fund Transfer)
  • ATM'S
  • Cheque Clearing
  • Internet Banking
  • Telephone Banking
  • EFTPOS (Electronic Payment for Goods)

All of these things are new because of ICT, they were created because of ICT. You can transfer money through the internet, down the phone and you can have your cheques clear on an automated system, all of these things play a great part in the banking industry.

Although money is easier to handle in cash, you may want to pay a big amount that is just unsafe to carry around, this is why ETF or EFTPOS is useful; carrying a card with all your funds on them with one security pin allows you to simply pass money back and forth and withdraw as much as needed.

Most bills are also paid via the internet or telephone banking nowadays.

The impacts of ICT on Business

Business has gained many positives from ICT for example, all businesses can now send messages and emails easier and cheaper because of the advanced technology we use today. ICT has allowed businesses to open up business all around the world with the use of E-commerce and the use of international cyber markets.
ICT also played its part in business by allowing the customers to receive notifications of all the deals and sales, prices and websites that all share information about shops or companies.

Business also took a great blow when ICT came, the factory lines that once employed many people were taken over by machines run by ICT, the stock ordering is now run by an automated system which also reduces less paper work therefore Admins lost part of their jobs.

Impacts of ICT on Health

There are many impacts on health because of ICT, many are negative but there are some positives. ICT and computers can all lead to eye strain, back and neck ache and even RSI (Repetitive strain injury) in your wrists and hands.

This image is a clear example of Bad posture, these are the things that can lead to back and neck ache if you don't take the correct posture.

Although these things are all bad, there are some positives to health using ICT, we have advanced health care in hospitals because of computers we also have many programs on computers that enhance learning.

ICT has the ability to test peoples minds and give brain training, this is great for anyone as it will help in later life.

Impacts of ICT in Retailing

Above is a picture of retail sales, this is a small demostration of Chip and Pin cards in Retail, ICT allows you to pay via card in shops now and using the chip and pin machines.

Retail uses technology combined with ICT to make sales, these sales are either in shop or with a card or they are paid online using the shops website. Retail shops have started to involve the use of Self-Checkout machines, these machines use ICT to allow the customer to scan and pay for their own items.

Retail also uses technology to re-stock items, a program "Stock control" can detect when stock is running low on a certain item and it will order another batch for the next delivery.

The Impact of ICT in Crime and Policing

Crime has advanced by the use of ICT, credit card fraud has become a very big problem in the crime industry.

Sarah received a call from her bank mid September, asking if she had been to Italy. She had recently been on holiday there, but she hadn't taken her credit card so was puzzled by a transaction from Italy that the bank was calling about.

This is a prime example of credit card fraud and the bank contacting her telling her the details of the crime committed, card cloning is easily solved by giving back new details.

Hacking is another crime, people hack computer systems, they hack into companies and only recently a man hacked into the FBI.

The advantages of ICT in Policing vary between AMPR (Number plate recognition) to databasing information about people and crimes that have happened. The databases on people and cars store information like the number plates .

The following was taken from: http://www.learn-ict.org.uk/materials/documents/secondary/gcse_it/it_police.pdf

The criminal conviction database includes the following fields
• Name (the one the criminal is known by)
• Real name
• Height
• Approx. weight
• Colour of eyes
• Colour of hair
• Glasses
• Tattoos
• Scars
• Warning signals e.g. do they usually carry firearms
• Previous convictions
• Method of crime

This information is also accessible to Scotland Yard through ICT and  they have it all saved as much as we can access their information.

Impacts of ICT in Education

ICT has impacted Education in many ways positive and negative,  teaching and registration has become computerized, databases store the information collected by the online registers. ICT is now used to teach in school and college via Interactive whiteboards, the internet and projectors. All of these things are an advantage to education because they allow more advanced learning and much quicker instead of writing on a chalk board. Letters and Records are all stored on databases and spreadsheets. Computer Aided Learning is used in education do allow learning easier for people with disabilities. They also generate Timetables via PDF files or other applications.

Education has advanced due to ICT but it has taken away the basic life skills of handwriting, drawing tables and other basic things.

The Impacts on Jobs.

ICT is used all over the world now and it has taken a big chunk of jobs within our society.

Major companies have been turned into online companies via the use of websites and online payments, this has led to a reduction of retail jobs and makes the sales almost automated.

Shops like Comet are struggling to keep up to date with major companies and they are starting to take most of their business online, this is causing many people to lose their jobs and become unemployed.

Factories have begun to use ICT and technology to take the places of society, the machines are being controlled by ICT due to the precision of the machines. The ICT allows things to be created perfectly because it uses exact copies. Humans are being ruled out of factories because they can make mistakes.

Industrialisation has been taken over by ICT, the use of technology and CAD/CAM is used to create items of technology and interactive programs and applications in a more advanced way.

The Impacts of ICT on Society first post.

This post is to start the new blog about the impacts of ICT on society.
